Crete 2

So it is Monday, October 5, 2009, and I am back in my little apartment after an incredible 4 days in Crete. Crete is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, at least Chania is anyway. I had two interesting experiences at taverns along the coast. The first was Saturday night, and a friend and I ran into our roommates while they were eating dinner, so we sat down. The waiter, probably in his early 20's, was talking to us for awhile. His name was Alex and got the biggest kick out of the fact that my name comes from his name and that we share the same name day. He then asked us girls and Micah if we wanted Moonshine, a really hard liquor. Well, no matter what we would say, it was brought out anyway. Micah and I were like, "Ohi, Ohi (no no), We don't drink." Alex responds with this, "You are Americans and you don't drink?!" Well, what a wonderful impression of Americans other cultures must have.... I ate the grapes that came with it, but no drink. It smelled so strong! Yesterday a few of us ate at another little cute tavern for a late lunch. The waiter brought us each a huge mug of beer after our meal was over. Now, it is a cultural thing in Greece to give alcohol after dinner, but I don't drink alcohol. We almost felt bad leaving it sit there after we knew we didn't have to pay for it. Well, we left the money on the table without even getting a check and booked it. That waiter was creepy anyway. He constantly smiled at me and even played with my hair one time. I had no clue he was there because he snuck up from behind...plain weird. I bought some presents for people and then had to try and enjoy the 2 1/2 hour bus ride to the port for our overnight ferry back to Athens. I sat next to Michael, my Monuments of Greece professor. The bus was tiny and crammed, so that was quite interesting. As he sits down he says to me, "Aleka, I think this is the closest we will ever get." It may sound weird, but it makes sense if you know him. I also cannot believe I forgot to write this in the earlier Crete blog. Our bus was sideswiped on Friday while on our way back to the hotel after a day of excursions. Although the car drove off after it hit, it did quite a number on the rear left lights. Practically tore them right off! Thankfully, no one was injured, especially JB because he was sitting in the exact corner where the car hit. I can officially say I was in a bus accident in Greece, how many people can say that? Anyway, homework is calling....unfortunately. Love you all.
